  • Author: Elisa
  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4–6 servings 1x

Description

These Salisbury meatballs and mashed potatoes are a classic comfort food dish featuring juicy meatballs simmered in rich brown gravy served over buttery mashed potatoes. Perfect for family dinners, meal prep, or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale

For the meatballs:

  • 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 preferred)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder

For the gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the mashed potatoes:

  • 2½ pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and chopped

  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • 1/2 cup milk or cream (adjust to desired texture)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and set aside.

  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, egg, Worcestershire, mustard powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.

  3. Shape into meatballs. Brown in a skillet over medium heat and set aside.

  4. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute to form a roux.

  5. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire. Simmer 5 minutes until thickened. Season to taste.

  6. Return meatballs to the pan and simmer in the gravy for 10–12 minutes until fully cooked.

  7. Mash cooked potatoes with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Serve meatballs and gravy over mashed potatoes.

Notes

Use fresh breadcrumbs for tender meatballs.

Avoid overmixing the meat mixture to keep the texture light.

Warm milk before adding to mashed potatoes for the creamiest results.

If gravy thickens too much while standing, whisk in a splash of broth.

Meatballs and mashed potatoes can be made ahead and reheated gently.
