Description

Make crispy homemade hash browns with just a few ingredients. Learn how to make golden, flavorful hash browns in 7 simple steps—perfect for any meal!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef:

  • 2 large potatoes
  • 1 ½ tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon potato starch
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons rice flour
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Grate the Potatoes: Start by grating the potatoes using a box grater. Once grated, transfer the potatoes to a bowl of ice water and let them sit for 20 minutes. The cold water helps remove excess starch and makes the hash browns crispier when fried.
  2. Drain and Squeeze the Potatoes: After the 20 minutes, drain the water from the potatoes and use a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to squeeze out as much moisture as possible.
  3. Cook the Potatoes: Heat butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the shredded potatoes to the pan and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the potatoes are slightly golden and softened.
  4. Cool the Potatoes: Transfer the cooked potatoes into a bowl and let them cool slightly for a few minutes.
  5. Prepare the Dough: Once the potatoes have cooled, add the salt, garlic powder, potato starch, cornstarch, rice flour, and water. Mix everything together until a thick dough-like consistency forms. If the dough is too thick, add a splash more water to reach the right consistency.
  6. Shape the Hash Browns: Using your hands, shape the potato mixture into rectangular hash browns. Once shaped, transfer the hash browns to a lined plate and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  7. Fry the Hash Browns: In a non-stick pan or pot, heat about an inch of oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chilled hash browns to the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • Add cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese or parmesan on top of the hash browns before frying for an extra cheesy crunch.
  • Mix in veggies: Add onions, peppers, or spinach to the potato mixture for more flavor and texture.
  • Season to taste: Experiment with different seasonings such as paprika, chili powder, or fresh herbs to customize the flavor.
