8 slices white bread, crusts removed
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
6 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper


Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.

  • Butter one side of each bread slice and cut them diagonally into triangles.

  • Arrange half the bread slices, butter-side down, to cover the bottom of the dish.

  • Sprinkle half the shredded cheese evenly over the bread.

  • Add a second layer of buttered bread triangles, followed by the remaining cheese.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.

  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and cheese.

  • Let sit for 10–15 minutes so the bread absorbs the mixture.

  • Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until golden and the center is set.

 

  • Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving

Notes

Use day-old bread for better absorption and texture.

Add-ins like sautéed vegetables, herbs, or cooked turkey bacon can enhance flavor.
