Ingredients
8 slices white bread, crusts removed
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
6 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Butter one side of each bread slice and cut them diagonally into triangles.
Arrange half the bread slices, butter-side down, to cover the bottom of the dish.
Sprinkle half the shredded cheese evenly over the bread.
Add a second layer of buttered bread triangles, followed by the remaining cheese.
In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and cheese.
Let sit for 10–15 minutes so the bread absorbs the mixture.
Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until golden and the center is set.
Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving
