Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients for Authentic Greek Pita Bread:
- 12.3 ounces (350 grams) all-purpose flour — the base of your dough
- 8.4 ounces (250 grams) lukewarm water — helps activate the yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar — feeds the yeast for a nice rise
- 2 teaspoons instant dry yeast — ensures your dough is light and airy
- 1 teaspoon salt — adds flavor and balances the sweetness
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for cooking) — keeps the dough tender and gives it that authentic Mediterranean richness
Instructions
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: Whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the Wet Ingredients and Knead: Pour in the lukewarm water and olive oil. Knead for 2–3 minutes until the dough is slightly sticky.
- Let the Dough Rise: Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Dough: Once risen, divide the dough into six pieces and roll each into a ball. Flatten into 6-inch rounds.
- Cook the Pita: Heat a skillet over medium heat, lightly grease it with olive oil, and cook each round for 1–2 minutes on each side until golden and puffed.
Notes
- Use lukewarm water. Too hot or too cold can affect the yeast’s performance.
- Don’t over-knead. Knead until the dough is elastic, but don’t overdo it.
- Preheat the skillet well. This ensures a good puff and golden crust.
- Stack and cover. Keep the cooked pita under a tea towel to keep them soft and warm.
