Description
Make this banana split dump cake with bananas, cherries, and cake mix. A quick and fruity dessert that’s perfect for parties or family nights.
Ingredients
1 (20 oz) can crushed pineapple, with juice
1 (21 oz) can cherry pie filling
2 ripe bananas, sliced
1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
1 cup chocolate chips (semisweet or milk chocolate)
¾ cup unsalted butter, melted
Optional toppings: chopped nuts, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, maraschino cherries, vanilla ice cream
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Layer the fruit: Spread the entire can of crushed pineapple with its juice evenly across the bottom of the dish. Next, spoon the cherry pie filling on top and gently spread it for even distribution.
Add sliced bananas: Arrange the banana slices in a single layer over the fruit mixture.
Sprinkle the cake mix: Evenly distribute the dry cake mix over the top of the fruit and banana layers. Do not stir.
Add chocolate chips: Scatter the chocolate chips over the dry cake mix.
Pour melted butter: Drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface, trying to cover as much of the dry mix as possible. It’s okay if a few dry spots remain; they will bake up crispy.
Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly around the edges.
Cool slightly before serving: Let the cake rest for 10–15 minutes to set before scooping and serving.
Notes
This recipe is highly adaptable, so don’t hesitate to make it your own. You can add toasted coconut, use butterscotch chips instead of chocolate, or swirl in peanut butter for a salty-sweet twist. Some bakers like to add a cream cheese layer for tanginess—just dollop sweetened cream cheese over the fruit layer before adding the cake mix.
You could also try layering in brownies, cookie crumbles, or graham cracker pieces to create a hybrid dessert. Feel free to get creative based on what you have in your pantry and your family’s favorite flavors.
